Central Alberta Faces Measles Outbreak!

Central Alberta is in the grips of a measles outbreak, with a staggering 15 new infections reported in just two days! This surge has made the Central Zone the epicenter of the outbreak, with a total of 21 cases confirmed so far. The affected area spans from Rocky Mountain House to Drumheller and reaching into Saskatchewan.

Alberta's Immunization Rates Under Fire!

In the shadow of 43 reported cases across the province, frustration boils over among health officials who are pointing fingers at the government. The Edmonton Zone Staff Association has called out the provincial leadership for failing to address alarmingly low immunization rates, which are essential for community protection against the virus.

"Measles is one of the most contagious diseases known, requiring at least 95% vaccination coverage for community immunity. Unfortunately, Alberta's current vaccination rate lingers at a mere 69% among children by age two," the association stated.

Some communities are experiencing shockingly low vaccination levels: High Level sits at just 11%, Two Hills County at 25%, and Taber at 28%. These numbers are alarming health professionals and could contribute significantly to the ongoing outbreak.

Where Have Cases Been Reported?

Since the onset of this outbreak, potential exposure locations have emerged in Calgary, Edmonton, Airdrie, Balzac, Fort Vermilion, Taber, Lethbridge, Two Hills, and Vegreville. The demographics of those affected? A concerning majority—39 children and youth, alongside four adults aged 18 and over.
