Microsoft Azure Network Issues Overview

Microsoft has cautioned users of its Azure cloud services to brace for "intermittent errors" that continue to impact operations, due to a networking service configuration change in the US East region. This troublesome situation began around 10 PM UTC on January 8 and particularly affects the East US 2 zone.

Impact on Azure Services

It was reported that a network configuration issue in one of the zone's data centers caused three storage partitions to go unhealthy. As a result, many customers encountered significant challenges, including erratic connectivity for virtual machines, problems allocating resources, and communication failures with regional services.

The malfunction has notably impacted a range of Azure services, including Azure Databricks, Azure Container Apps, Azure Functions, Azure App Service, SQL Managed Instances, Azure Data Factory, and Azure Container Instances, among others. Even widely-used applications like Power BI and PostgreSQL flexible servers were not spared. Users relying on Private Endpoint Network Security Groups for inter-service communication also faced disruptions.

Microsoft's Response

As part of the response strategy, Microsoft took proactive measures by rerouting traffic away from the troubled zone, which helped alleviate some issues for non-zonal services. However, as of Friday morning, services dependent on the affected zone were still experiencing issues.
