In a shocking turn of events, former Vancouver Whitecaps youth program player Nathan Demian found himself at the center of a terrifying incident that nearly cost him his life. While celebrating a remarkable Ohio State victory that catapulted the Buckeyes to the final four in soccer, Nathan was struck by a stray bullet during a violent altercation between two passing vehicles in Columbus on December 7.
The 22-year-old detailed the harrowing experience to CTV News, sharing, “It went through my right abdomen and then transversed through my whole body and then ended up on my back left side.” Initially believing he had only sustained minor injuries, Nathan walked to the ambulance, unprepared for the deep severity of his situation.
“It was supposed to be a regular night,” Nathan recalled. “I thought they’d take the bullet out, and I’d be back on the field by Friday.” However, as medical personnel rushed him into surgery, his sister Anna—a family doctor in Langley—raced to his side, anxiously awaiting news of her brother’s fate.
“He almost died on the operating table with how much blood loss there was,” Anna stated, highlighting the severity of his injuries. Doctors warned Nathan that he might need a feeding tube and ostomy bag for life, but against all odds, his recovery took a hopeful turn. "In contrast to how severe the injury was, the recovery has been nothing short of a miracle to witness,” Anna expressed, marveling at Nathan’s progress.
Remarkably, Nathan was discharged from the hospital on Christmas Eve, allowing him to celebrate the holiday with his family. His sister’s joy was palpable as she reflected on the moment: “I could cry tears of joy... just to have him home and to hear his voice again.”
After returning to Langley, Nathan remained actively focused on his recovery. “Every single day was like a huge jump, a huge jump, a huge jump,” he said, acknowledging the ongoing challenges ahead, including a major surgery to reconnect part of his small intestine.
Now back in Columbus, he prepares for this pivotal surgery with the support of his sister and family. While disappointed to miss his team’s final four appearance, Nathan has gained a deeper appreciation for life. “Once I realized I probably should have died, I had a little bit more appreciation for just being alive,” he shared.
Nathan is determined to train with the Buckeyes for the upcoming 2025 season, which kicks off in August. His optimism is grounded in realistic goals set with his doctors. “I would love to be back for the beginning of the year, and that’s genuinely something we’re aiming for,” he expressed.
As Nathan continues to defy the odds, his sister Anna remains a steadfast source of encouragement. “He continues to make strides that we couldn't have imagined,” she said. Regardless of whether he returns to the pitch for his final season, Nathan understands that this harrowing experience has transformed his outlook on life.
“The fact that I'm here and have a second chance at life is something I don’t want to take for granted,” he stated resolutely. “I want to put my best foot forward and make people's lives better in whatever way I can.”
This incredible story of survival not only showcases Nathan Demian’s resilience but also sheds light on the often-present dangers in everyday life. His miraculous recovery serves as a powerful reminder of life’s fragility and the importance of cherishing every moment.
