New Year's Eve Plans? Beware: 13 U.S. States are Experiencing 'Very High' Respiratory Virus Activity!

As the holiday season approaches, many are excitedly planning their New Year’s Eve celebrations, but caution is strongly advised. Respiratory illness activity across the United States has been officially classified as ‘high’ by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), with 13 states identified as having “very high” levels of respiratory virus activity.

Among the states facing alarming health issues, New Hampshire stands out, reporting the most severe cases. States like Texas and Georgia, along with approximately 11 others, are experiencing high levels of respiratory illnesses, including COVID-19, seasonal flu, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). This surge in infections has led to more individuals visiting emergency departments and an uptick in positivity rates for flu and COVID-19 tests.

According to CDC estimates, this season has seen over 3.1 million flu-related illnesses, with approximately 37,000 hospitalizations and around 1,500 deaths attributed to the flu alone. Pediatric flu-related deaths have tragically risen to nine, raising significant concerns among health officials. With winter in full swing, the CDC warns of an expected increase in COVID-19 cases in the coming weeks.

While the vaccines for these respiratory illnesses exist, vaccination rates are disappointingly low. Currently, only 41.9% of adults have received a flu vaccine, and a mere 21.4% have opted for the updated COVID-19 vaccine. Despite the availability of RSV vaccines for specific adult populations, they remain underutilized.

The CDC is stressing the critical importance of getting vaccinated to help safeguard against these dangerous viruses, especially as gatherings are likely to increase during the holidays.
