Nikki Penrice, a brave mother from Banbury, Oxfordshire, found herself facing the unimaginable when she was diagnosed with bowel cancer at eight months pregnant. Her immediate concern was the safety of her unborn daughter, Connie, who she now cherishes as a "miracle."

During her pregnancy in 2021, Nikki endured multiple hospital visits due to hyperemesis gravidarum, a severe form of morning sickness that left her in extreme discomfort. However, the pain escalated, leading to doctors conducting a crucial scan that revealed a mass on her bowel. The grim news came when a doctor placed a sympathetic hand on her shoulder and delivered the devastating cancer diagnosis.

"My first thought was for my baby," Nikki recalled. "All I wanted was for her to be born safely."

On December 21, 2021, her medical team made the decision to induce labor, allowing Nikki to welcome her daughter into the world. Yet, just weeks later, on January 2, her condition worsened dramatically as her bowel perforated, necessitating emergency surgery. Nikki endured the dual challenge of motherhood and recovery, saying, "I had to be fed through a central line in my neck, which made holding and feeding Connie very difficult."

Despite these challenges, Nikki's journey took a poignant turn. In early 2023, she suffered another heartache when her father, Anthony Potter, was diagnosed with cancer and passed away just 17 days later. His death spurred Nikki to engage in charitable events like Cancer Research UK's Pretty Muddy obstacle course, a race aimed at raising awareness and funds for cancer research. In a touching tribute, she wore T-shirts adorned with her father’s picture during the event.

"My experience with cancer and my father's illness taught me the importance of living each day to the fullest," she said, reflecting on the tough lessons learned through their experiences. "As my family and I participate in these events, we will carry my father in our hearts."
