Canadian stand-up comedian and beloved former talk show host Mike Bullard has passed away at the age of 67. His family confirmed his death to CTV News on Sunday afternoon, alongside long-time friend and Yuk Yuk's co-founder, Mark Breslin. Bullard's body was found in his apartment, with preliminary reports suggesting he had faced health complications, although the exact cause of death remains pending coroner’s investigation.

The tragic news reached his family on Friday. Chuck Jackson, Bullard's half-brother and a musician, shared that the family is processing their grief privately at this difficult time.

Mark Breslin recounted his first meeting with Bullard over three decades ago, noting that Bullard's determination was evident early on. He sought opportunities to emcee at Yuk Yuk's Comedy Club, with aspirations to host his own late-night talk show. True to his ambition, Bullard went on to host “Open Mike with Mike Bullard” on CTV from 1997 to 2003, a show that earned him two Gemini awards, before moving to “The Mike Bullard Show” on Global for a brief period.

However, his career faced significant turmoil after he was charged with criminal harassment and obstruction of justice in 2016. Bullard pleaded guilty to lesser charges and underwent probation and treatment programs, casting a shadow over his comedic legacy.

Despite these controversies, Breslin emphasized Bullard’s vast contributions to Canadian comedy, particularly in crowd work and emceeing. “He was one of the best stand-up comics in this country, especially with crowd work. It’s a shame many younger Canadians don’t know much about him,” Breslin lamented, referring to his extraordinary ability to engage and entertain live audiences.

Bullard was not only a fixture in the comedy scene but also served his community in unexpected ways. In 2022, he volunteered in Ukraine amidst the conflict following Russia’s invasion. Breslin initially thought Bullard was joking when he mentioned going to Ukraine, yet it revealed a more humane side to the often-gruff comedian. “He had a heart of gold,” Breslin recalled, describing Bullard as kind and supportive toward fellow comics.

Mike Bullard was renowned for his unique ability to connect with his audience; his talent for improvisational comedy made him a memorable figure in the Canadian entertainment landscape. Known as “the best comic in Canada for crowd work,” he had a knack for engaging audience members directly and humorously, leaving lasting impressions.

While no funeral arrangements have been confirmed, a celebration of life is planned when family members from overseas can attend. For now, the focus remains on honoring Bullard's legacy: a preeminent figure in Canadian comedy whose impact will be felt for generations.

Stay tuned as more updates regarding his remembrance and tributes from fans and fellow comedians are anticipated in the coming weeks.
