A groundbreaking charity based on Vancouver Island is making waves by providing financial support for alternative treatments sought by Lyme disease patients—treatments that public health care and private insurance often overlook.

Filling the Gaps in Healthcare

Funding for Life is tackling what it describes as an urgent medical gap. This charity is dedicated to helping those affected by Lyme disease access therapies like acupuncture and homeopathy, which many believe can be life-changing.

Gail Owens, the charity's president, explains, "Natural doctors and practitioners have opened up several avenues to assist people living with Lyme disease. Our mission is to ensure these patients have access to treatments that show promise in helping them recover."

Understanding Lyme Disease

Lyme disease is a serious condition spread through tick bites, often presenting with daunting symptoms. Early signs can include a distinctive bull's-eye rash, fever, fatigue, headaches, and muscle and joint pain. As the disease progresses, it can lead to severe complications such as arthritis, nerve damage, and heart issues.

Rising Cases, Rising Need

In British Columbia, less than 40 cases of Lyme disease have been reported annually since 2013, according to the B.C. Centre for Disease Control. However, with warmer temperatures increasing tick populations nationwide, more people are being diagnosed with this challenging illness.

Owens emphasizes that while Funding for Life initially focuses on Lyme disease, the organization intends to extend its support to address other medical needs in the future.
