Health officials in Manitoba are sounding the alarm as measles cases surge in an area with the province's lowest vaccination rate. The highly contagious virus is making its presence felt, and efforts are being ramped up to curb its spread.

Expert Concerns Over Potential Outbreaks

Dr. Davinder Singh, Manitoba's top public health official on measles, expressed longstanding concerns about the likelihood of significant outbreaks. "If it finds its way into an under-vaccinated population during a contagious period, the spread could escalate quickly," he cautioned.

Recent Cases Confirmed in Southern Health Region

On Wednesday, two new measles cases were confirmed in an elementary school situated in the Rural Municipality of Stanley. Public health authorities promptly organized an immunization clinic at Southwood School, aiming to offer vaccinations to students and local residents.

Exposure Locations Identified

The province confirmed that exposure sites included Southwood School on April 14 and 15, as well as Bus 2683, which operates between Southwood School and Prairie Dale School in Schanzenfeld.

Travel-Related Cases

These latest infections trace their origins back to recent travel to Mexico, highlighting the potential for imported cases to fuel local outbreaks.

Public Health's Response

In a letter to parents and staff, Superintendent Dan Ward reassured the community that Southwood School is collaborating with public health officials to safeguard the health of students and families.
