Mustafa Ozgen, the company’s president of devices, revealed in a recent statement that he sees “a ton of opportunities” in this segment, framing it as a long-term strategy for the company.

New Roku Ultra Launch

Roku, best known for its streaming devices, has recently unveiled an upgraded version of its flagship Roku Ultra box, now priced at $99. This new release boasts enhancements like a faster performance and an upgraded remote control. While Roku once built its reputation around set-top boxes—devices that offer users the company’s interface and streaming apps by connecting to traditional televisions—the industry now favors smart TVs that natively incorporate such functionalities.

Adaptation to Market Trends

Roku has also adapted to this shift by selling its own branded TVs and providing technology to other TV manufacturers. Ozgen acknowledged the reality of the changing landscape, noting that smart TVs are currently outselling external streaming devices. However, he asserted that Roku’s external players remain popular, particularly among consumers with older televisions seeking to modernize their viewing experience. According to Ozgen, Roku’s devices outperform their competitors in the market.

Financial Performance

In terms of financial performance, Roku reported a revenue of $491 million from its devices category in the past year, although the company does not disclose specifics for each type of product. The real powerhouse for Roku, however, is its platform and programming content, which raked in nearly $3 billion in revenue during 2023.

Challenges Facing Roku

Despite the popularity of its content services, the devices segment has faced challenges, including a negative gross margin that has contributed to the company's financial losses. Following a dim financial forecast in February, Roku’s stock took a significant hit but has since started to recover, albeit still down 19% for 2024.

Further advancements are on the horizon, according to Ozgen, although support for the much-hyped 8K resolution still appears to be several years away due to limited programming availability. While the realm of virtual reality is gaining traction among some users, Roku currently has no intentions of venturing into this technology.

As competition heats up, rivals are also making noteworthy moves in the streaming device market. In August, Alphabet Inc.’s Google announced the launch of a new AI-driven TV Streamer that promises to reshape the set-top box experience. Meanwhile, Apple Inc. has yet to reveal any significant upgrades to its devices since a price cut and processor enhancement in 2022, although software updates have recently rolled out to improve user functionality.
