Saskatchewan Reports Surge in Respiratory Illnesses: Flu Season Begins!

As the frigid winter months set in, respiratory illnesses across Canada are witnessing alarming increases, particularly in Saskatchewan. The province's healthcare officials have reported significant upticks in influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases, marking a clear indication that flu season has officially commenced.

While COVID-19 cases saw a slight decline of 10% between December 15 and 28, alarming increases were seen in influenza and RSV test rates, spiking by 6% and 20%, respectively. This rising trend in respiratory ailments demands attention, especially with schools and holiday gatherings, where viruses can spread rapidly.

RSV, a particularly worrisome virus, predominantly impacts children aged four and under, often leading to hospitalizations as the illness can manifest in serious respiratory distress. In a concerning revelation, hospital admissions for RSV saw nearly a staggering 100% increase in the latter half of December. Fortunately, there have been no reported fatalities connected to this surge as of late last month.

Terry Klassen, the provincial department head for the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA), expressed cautious optimism regarding the future of RSV prevention. Klassen anticipates that a vaccine will soon be available for the Saskatchewan population, albeit too late to impact this flu season. “This vaccine won't assist us this season,” he noted, “but we hope in the coming years to alleviate the burden on families by providing this preventative measure to keep our children healthy and out of the hospital.”

As we brace ourselves for the peak of flu season, experts encourage the public to take preventive actions. Regular handwashing, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and ensuring vaccinations are up to date are critical to reducing transmission rates. Health officials continue to advise that these measures can save lives, particularly among the vulnerable populations.
