As Saskatoon faces another major winter storm, residents are busy clearing their sidewalks and driveways, while city crews and contractors work tirelessly to remove snow from the roads. The City of Saskatoon has issued a reminder to citizens about important rules and regulations regarding snow removal.
Key Rules for Clear Sidewalks
One of the critical rules highlighted by Matt Grazier, the director of community standards for the city, is that snow blowers can only be used from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends and statutory holidays. In addition, residents should never blow snow from their sidewalks onto the road, as it can create dangerous driving conditions, especially on streets that may not receive regular snow clearing.
“Snow should always be directed onto your lawn,” Grazier emphasized, noting that the city receives numerous complaints from residents about this issue each winter. Offenders can be ticketed for violating the sidewalk clearing bylaw, while noise complaints should be directed to the Saskatoon Police Service.
Additionally, residents are required to clear their sidewalks within 48 hours after a snowfall, or 24 hours for commercial properties. Failing to do so can lead to further complaints and potential fines.
Snow Crews in Action
This winter, Saskatoon's snow crews and contractors have been doing everything possible to keep the roads safe for travel. After a recent snowfall, which deposited over 25 centimeters of snow across the city, the City strongly urged drivers to stay home if they can.
"Fewer vehicles on the road allow our snow crews to work more efficiently," the city stated. Over the next 72 hours, city teams will prioritize high-speed routes as well as intersections and bridges before progressing to residential streets. As of Monday morning, approximately 91% of Priority 1 routes had been cleared, with crews working overnight utilizing 36 graders, 11 plows, and several sidewalk plows.
Tow Truck Operators Are Busy
Alongside the struggles of city workers, local tow truck companies have seen an uptick in business due to the storm. Wait times for services have ranged from 45 minutes to three hours as they respond to an influx of calls from stranded vehicles. Rae Purdy, office manager for Astro Towing, noted how the quieter Sunday allowed for easier management of priorities, although they anticipate increased demand as more residents venture out.
Purdy advised everyone to dress adequately for the winter conditions and remain in their vehicles if they encounter difficulties on the road. Prioritizing safety is essential as tow operators address the most critical situations first.
Final Thoughts
As Saskatoon continues to navigate through the storm, residents are encouraged to stay updated on weather warnings and city guidance. Clearing sidewalks promptly, adhering to snow removal regulations, and observing driving precautions is crucial in keeping the community safe. Winter is not just a season of beauty, but also one that demands responsibility from all of us!
Stay safe, Saskatoon, and brace yourselves for more snow! ☃️
