Urgent Message from Algoma Public Health
Attention families! Algoma Public Health (APH) is sounding the alarm as school suspension season approaches. Parents and guardians are reminded of the crucial importance of keeping childhood vaccinations up to date.
The Vaccination Requirement
Under Ontario’s Immunization of School Pupils Act (ISPA), students must be immunized against specific diseases to attend school. Failing to comply could lead to serious consequences for students as early as this spring.
Suspension Letters On the Way
APH is proactively reaching out to parents of secondary school students in Grades 9 to 12 who have incomplete immunization records. Following earlier notifications sent in January, new letters now include suspension orders, giving families a timeline to secure vaccine appointments and submit updated records.
The Consequences of Inaction
If families do not act swiftly, students could face suspension from school for up to 20 days. APH is diligently reviewing immunization records and may distribute additional suspension notices as necessary.
A Commitment to Community Health
"Preventing infectious diseases through immunization is crucial for maintaining a safe school environment,” stated Dr. John Tuinema, acting medical officer of health at APH. High vaccination rates are essential for community protection, combating serious illnesses like measles and whooping cough among school-aged children.
