At 58 years old, Jill Tozer took a leap of faith that would change her life forever. Leaving behind her life in New Zealand, she embarked on an adventure to Penang, Malaysia—a place she'd fantasized about retiring in for years.

Tozer, a former physiotherapist, had spent much of her life in Christchurch until a devastating earthquake in 2011 upended her world. "I was at a crossroads," she recalled. Faced with high rent and dwindling job opportunities, she contemplated a drastic change. After some soul-searching, she realized she could thrive in Malaysia on her investment income instead.

A Glimpse of Paradise

Having visited Malaysia before and envied friends like Heather and John enjoying sunsets from their porch, Tozer knew she wanted in on that lifestyle. Encouraged by her daughter to try a three-month trial, Tozer arrived in Malaysia, apartment hunting in just a week. She found her dream three-bedroom apartment in Tanjung Tokong for about $450 a month—a steal by any standard, especially with a beautiful sea view!

Living the Dream in a Welcoming Community

Tozer embraced Malaysia with open arms, eagerly acquiring an MM2H visa designed to attract retirees. As of late December, nearly 60,000 expats reside in Malaysia, benefitting from its appealing lifestyle. The warm climate was a significant draw for Tozer, who enjoys a life free from the cold. "I love being able to swim at any time!" she said, relishing her new freedom.

Adapting to her new surroundings, Tozer found that the community was inclusive and friendly. She appreciates the respect older individuals receive here compared to New Zealand. With her cost of living around $850 monthly, she spends her days indulging in yoga, swimming, and game nights, often enjoying delightful meals out without a hefty price tag.

A Strong Sense of Community

Despite arriving alone, Tozer quickly built a supportive network through expat groups and meetups, forming lifelong friendships. "It’s a wonderful place to connect with people, where the cost of socializing isn’t a worry," she noted.

Looking Ahead: Will She Stay in Paradise?

Though recent visa rule changes may alter the future for expats, Tozer remains optimistic. The new financial requirements for MM2H visas could complicate things, but she’s focused on living in the moment for now.

"Eventually, I might want my kids closer, but right now, I'm enjoying my peaceful life here. Malaysia feels safe for a single woman like me, and that's invaluable," she concluded.

Jill Tozer’s story reflects the adventures that await those willing to chase their dreams—even when it’s at an age often associated with settling down. As she thrives in Malaysia, it’s clear that at 68, she still has so much more to explore!
