In a shocking turn of events, two residents of Ontario have fallen victim to online job scams, losing a combined total of more than $80,000 through deceptive schemes advertised on social media platforms.

Meet Greg Burgos, a Toronto native who thought he found a glimmer of hope during a dark time in his life. After losing his job and facing serious health issues, he stumbled upon a social media ad that promised an enticing part-time job opportunity. Eager to alleviate his financial struggles, Burgos responded to the call.

"It said, ‘Is anyone interested in a part-time job making a little extra money?’ and I thought, ‘Why not?’" Greg recalls. He was quickly directed to set up a TikTok shop, where he was encouraged to invest in products upfront, with the promise of a hefty commission down the line.

Initially, it seemed legit. Burgos watched his online account swell, convinced that soon he’d be able to cash out. But the moment he attempted to withdraw his funds, reality hit hard—he had been scammed. "I just want my money back. This is my hard-earned savings!" he lamented.

Maria's Devastation

Then there's Maria, another victim who fell prey to a similar scam. After sending out her resume, she was contacted via social media with an offer to review products online. The catch? She had to front her own money to earn commissions. "Every time I thought I hit my target, it was back to square one, and they kept asking for more money," Maria explained, revealing she lost a staggering $70,000.

"It’s absolutely devastating. I feel awful because that’s a lot of money," she added, reflecting the pain of her financial loss.

Expert Warnings

Cybersecurity experts like Claudiu Popa urge caution when it comes to unsolicited job offers, especially those that pop up on social media. He advises never to engage with strangers who appeal to your vulnerabilities, and to be particularly wary of offers that promise high pay for minimal work.

"A major red flag is being asked to pay money to earn money. Always research the company and safeguard your personal information," Popa warned.

TikTok Responds

Scammers have been exploiting the TikTok brand by luring victims into downloading unofficial versions of the app. TikTok confirms, "These messages are scams. Be wary of any offers that don't seem legitimate." They encourage users to think twice before downloading apps from unofficial sources.
