Shocking Survey Reveals 32% of B.C. Women Struggle with Menopause Symptoms at Work!

Groundbreaking Survey Findings

A groundbreaking survey conducted by the Women’s Health Research Institute, in collaboration with the B.C. Women’s Health Foundation and Pacific Blue Cross, has uncovered a startling reality for working women in British Columbia. According to the survey, 32% of women employees report that menopause symptoms significantly impact their jobs!

Survey Demographics

The survey, which interviewed over 2,000 women aged 39 to 60, revealed that an overwhelming 92% experience moderate to extremely severe menopause symptoms. Alarmingly, 24% of participants admitted to missing work days in the past year due to these debilitating symptoms. But that’s not all—9.4% reported being forced to decline job promotions or career advancement opportunities because of their menopause struggles, while some even faced termination.

Mental Health Concerns

Adding to the concern, around 41.2% of women disclosed coping with concurrent mental health conditions. Despite rising discussions about menopause, the survey highlights a troubling continuation of stigma and silence surrounding women’s reproductive health and aging, which hampers efforts to provide effective support during this crucial life stage.

Coping Mechanisms

To tackle these health challenges, over two-fifths (43.5%) of respondents sought help from alternative health-care providers, including naturopaths and mental health specialists. On average, these women spent nearly $900 out of pocket each year on treatments, and among those who used these services, three-quarters reported noticeable improvements in their symptoms.

Call for Change

Sarah Hoffman, President and CEO of Pacific Blue Cross, stated, “The HER-BC study highlights areas where care and support for midlife women can be enhanced in British Columbia. As a health-care benefits provider, we recognize the importance of evolving our services to better support women at this stage of life.” She emphasized that it is crucial for employers and healthcare providers to collaborate and ensure that the necessary resources and support systems are readily available for women navigating menopause.
