In a stunning turn of events, Ryan Coogler’s latest release, “Sinners,” has already set the stage for a potential box office sensation just days after its impressive debut. This $90 million film has captured the industry's attention, raising questions about its profitability so soon in its run.

On Tuesday, April 22, just five days after hitting theaters, “Sinners” raked in an impressive $8.6 million. This followed a robust $7.8 million on Monday, bringing its domestic total to a remarkable $64.4 million. These numbers easily outpaced its Thursday preview earnings of $4.7 million.

What’s even more astonishing is that Tuesday ticket prices are typically discounted, suggesting that the interest in “Sinners” is significantly stronger than it appears.

Looking at the competition, only the recent “A Minecraft Movie” had a more lucrative Tuesday this year, making $12.7 million in a single day. While “Sinners” may not hit Minecraft numbers, it’s poised to challenge the performance of “Us,” the last original horror film that opened bigger with a $71.1 million weekend.

In its first Tuesday, “Us” secured $7.9 million and ultimately grossed $256 million globally. Analysts estimate that “Sinners” needs to hit around $270 million to offset its production and marketing costs. Some back-of-the-envelope math projects that with a multiplier of 2.5—similar to hits like “Us” and “Nope”—“Sinners” could reach $120 million domestically and nearly $200 million worldwide.

Notably, the strong mid-week earnings reflect the film’s positive buzz and significant audience interest, according to Comscore Senior Analyst Paul Dergarabedian. He believes that criticisms regarding “Sinners” initial box office can be dispelled given its current trajectory and the likelihood of a strong second weekend.

As we anticipate how the film will perform in its second weekend, the initial signs are promising, especially given its “A” CinemaScore and the lack of nearby competition in the coming weeks.

Ryan Coogler, reflecting on the film’s personal significance, expressed gratitude to the audience in a recent letter, stating, “Together, maybe we can redefine what a blockbuster and a horror movie can be, and who fills IMAX seats.”
