A 12-year-old girl from County Durham, Niamh, is facing a challenging battle to regain her mobility seven months after a distressing injury occurred during a performance in London's prestigious West End. Niamh, who was participating in a production with her drama school, sustained an injury that her mother believes has drastically changed her life.

According to Helen, Niamh's mother, the accident happened during a performance last June when Niamh either twisted her ankle or foot. Initially believing it was just a minor injury, Niamh continued to perform due to the adrenaline rush. However, after discussing her discomfort with her mother, it became clear that the situation was far more serious.

Helen sought medical assistance, but initial assessments by doctors at the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust suggested no surgery was required. Sadly, Niamh has faced a string of unsuccessful treatments since then, and her condition has only worsened, leading to a deformed foot that needs correcting.

"This has set her back significantly, and her confidence has been shattered," Helen expressed to BBC Radio Tees. "From dancing on stage to relying on crutches and occasionally being in wheelchairs is a massive transition for such a young girl. She is also facing mental health challenges, and I've had to seek additional support for her as well."

The Struggle for Normalcy

Niamh's journey from a vibrant performer to someone grappling with physical limitations has been heartbreaking. Her schooling and social interactions have taken a hit, as she desperately misses her friends and musical theater activities. "We've worked tirelessly to help her out of her bedroom and regain some sense of normalcy," Helen shared.

Seeking Solutions

While Helen expressed gratitude for the support from their local authority and general practitioners, she is distressed by the ongoing struggle to find a solution. She noted that even referrals to chronic pain teams have emerged with waiting lists stretching up to two years, leaving Niamh in limbo and in desperate need of further surgical opinions.

"Our request is simple: we just want an appointment to discuss Niamh’s worsening condition," Helen added emphatically. "No child should have to suffer like this."

Response from Health Authorities

In response to Niamh's case, a spokesperson from South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust indicated that initial evaluations had found no surgical need at that time. However, they expressed readiness to reassess Niamh's case should her GP refer her again.
