In a recent warning, the Kremlin has stated that Russia may take military action against Ukraine’s energy facilities if Ukraine fails to adhere to a ceasefire agreement. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov communicated to Russian media platform Interfax, expressing that "Russia reserves the right" to respond if Ukraine breaches the terms of this moratorium.
Peskov emphasized the "illogical" nature of adhering to a ceasefire while Russia faces ongoing attacks on its own energy infrastructure. He claims that Russian forces remain committed to upholding the moratorium despite ongoing Ukrainian hostilities.
Adding to the growing tensions, Peskov accused the Ukrainian military of acting independently from its command structure, suggesting a chaotic situation within Ukraine's ranks. He pointed out that there have been continuous attacks that contradict any claims of compliance with the ceasefire agreement.
In response to these assertions, Ukraine’s General Staff categorically denied Russian Defense Ministry claims that Ukrainian forces have targeted energy infrastructure in Russia, arguing that these allegations are entirely false. They clarified that from March 25 to 27, no drone strikes were conducted against Russian energy facilities in regions such as Kursk and Bryansk, nor in Russian-occupied Crimea.
The ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine, allegedly facilitated by the United States, aims to halt attacks on each other’s energy infrastructure. However, Russia insists that Ukraine has violated this agreement daily. Moscow claims that this ceasefire began on March 18, yet there is no official confirmation from Ukraine regarding that timeline.
Dmytro Lytvyn, a communications advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has reported that since the purported start of the ceasefire, at least eight confirmed strikes on Ukrainian energy sites by Russian forces have taken place. He added that in the last 24 hours alone, there have been two confirmed strikes resulting in damage to Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, even before complete assessments from that day have been compiled.
As this situation continues to unfold, both countries remain at a critical juncture, with the potential for further conflict looming over their fragile agreements. The international community watches closely, as these developments could have significant implications for regional stability and energy security.
