The International Space Station Takes Evasive Action Against Space Debris!
In a dramatic move to safeguard its crew and equipment, the International Space Station (ISS) executed a successful avoidance maneuver on Tuesday, November 19, as NASA announced. This operation was aimed at dodging oncoming space debris, a critical task given the increasing threats in our orbit.
The maneuver involved firing the thrusters on the Progress 89 spacecraft for just over five minutes to elevate the ISS's orbit significantly. NASA reported that this adjustment was essential to create a safer distance from a fragment of space debris originating from a defunct defense meteorological satellite that disintegrated in 2015. According to ballistics officials, without this maneuver, the debris fragment could have come alarmingly close—within 2.5 miles of the space station!
This procedure, known as the Pre-determined Debris Avoidance Maneuver (PDAM), is not a novel action for the ISS; the station has successfully executed 37 such maneuvers since it began operations more than two decades ago in 2000. Ensuring the safety of the astronauts aboard the ISS is of utmost importance, especially since a direct impact from space junk, which can include spent rocket parts, old satellites, and tiny fragments resulting from previous collisions, could be catastrophic.
NASA has also reassured that the maneuver had no impact on the ISS’s operations and that it would not interfere with the upcoming launch of the Progress 90 cargo spacecraft, scheduled to take off from the iconic Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on Thursday.
