The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a prominent U.S.-based think tank, corroborated that Moscow's forces were also moving northeast of Vuhledar, intensifying their efforts to gain control over the area.

Video evidence circulated online over the past days shows Russian soldiers planting their flags and operating without significant resistance in various locations within Vuhledar. Military bloggers aligned with Russia claimed the capture of the town during this advance. Vadym Filashkin, the governor of the Donetsk region, described the situation as "very difficult," highlighting that enemy forces were nearing the city's center.

On Wednesday, the Khortytsia army group disclosed that Ukrainian forces had executed an authorized withdrawal maneuver aimed at safeguarding personnel and military equipment while preparing for future operations. The 72nd Mechanised Brigade of Ukraine had valiantly defended Vuhledar for almost two years, but the scale of the casualties they faced during this time remains unclear—however, the orderly retreat likely minimized losses.
