Tragic Discovery: Missing Teen Found Dead in Delta After Month-Long Search

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the search for Joseph Maku, an 18-year-old missing from Metro Vancouver for over a month, has ended in tragedy. Family members confirmed that Joseph was discovered deceased in Delta on November 29.

His sister, Brenda Maku, revealed that it is believed Joseph died on the same day he went missing—October 22. “Countless days and nights were spent searching in the cold and rain across various cities and parks,” Brenda expressed, highlighting the community's effort to find him. “So many people have reached out to let us know how loved and cared for Joseph was,” she added.

The Surrey RCMP had initially reached out to the public on October 25, shortly after he was reported missing, stating that he was last seen in Surrey on October 22. A renewed appeal for information came on November 8, but despite the efforts, the outcome is not what his family had hoped for.

Reflecting on the shock and deep sorrow that the family is experiencing, Brenda stated, “Now, we are absolutely devastated with the news and must shift our focus to mourning this unimaginable loss.” The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Joseph's death is being handled by the BC Coroners Service, but details remain scarce as it is an ongoing investigation.

The cause of death has yet to be determined, and Brenda shared her feelings of disbelief and sadness. “The investigation is still ongoing, and it will be a long time before we know how my brother passed. Until then, we will remain shocked that my brother is no longer here to shine a light on us all," she wrote.

In the wake of this tragedy, the Maku family expressed gratitude toward everyone who participated in the search and is now requesting privacy to grieve. The community has come together to honor Joseph’s memory, with family and friends holding a candlelight vigil at North Delta Secondary School on December 1. Plans for his funeral are currently underway.
