A shocking tragedy unfolded at Vancouver’s Wreck Beach when a 26-year-old international student, Rahul Ranwa, drowned while desperately calling for help in the ocean.

Emergency services sprang into action shortly after 3:25 p.m. on April 17, when the University RCMP received alarming reports of a swimmer in peril. Witnesses described the harrowing scene as the man struggled against the waves, shouting for assistance.

In a courageous but ultimately futile effort, a nearby bystander rushed into the water to save him, only to be forced back to shore for safety. As the search commenced, darkness fell, complicating the situation.

A massive rescue operation mobilized, involving Vancouver Fire Rescue Services, the BC Ambulance Service, Metro Vancouver Parks, and the Canadian Coast Guard, which dispatched multiple boats and divers from the Kitsilano Coast Guard Station.

As night set in, authorities grimly announced that the young man was presumed drowned, expressing condolences for his family during this heart-wrenching time. The search would pause until morning.

Originally from India, Ranwa moved to Canada just a year ago in 2024 to pursue his studies at Vancouver Community College. Described as a bright and dedicated student who was a member of the Student Council, he worked hard to support his family back home.

His family is now facing the heartbreaking task of arranging to send his body back to India, with the GoFundMe aimed at covering those expenses.
