According to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (VDWR), Lester Clayton Harvey Jr., a 58-year-old father of five, was among a group of hunters tracking a bear when the animal sought refuge in a tree. As the hunters moved away from the tree, one of them shot at the bear, inadvertently causing it to fall and strike Harvey, who was positioned about 10 feet away.

Efforts to save Harvey were initiated immediately as one of the hunters provided him with first aid until emergency responders arrived. He was transported to VCU South Hill Hospital and later to the VCU Medical Center in Richmond, where the gravity of his injuries ultimately led to his passing on December 13.
