Tragic Incident Shakes Ditidaht First Nation: One Dead, Arrest Made

2024-09-29

In a shocking turn of events, the serene community of Ditidaht First Nation is reeling after a tragic incident that resulted in one death and an arrest. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have noted an increased presence as they continue their investigation in the days following the incident.

Chief Councillor Judi Thomas called for calm amidst the chaos, urging members of the community to stay indoors and keep their windows closed on that fateful Saturday morning. The emergency response was triggered when Lake Cowichan RCMP received a call just after 7 a.m. reporting a disturbance at a residence within the First Nations territory. On arrival, officers discovered a deceased man, leading to the deployment of specialized units, including the Emergency Response Team.

These units are typically enlisted for high-risk situations such as serious crime apprehensions and hostage situations, adding to the urgency of the response. Fortunately, an adult man was later taken into custody without further incident, alleviating some immediate concerns within the community.

The RCMP initially classified the situation as involving a weapon, raising alarm bells among the local population. However, they have since stated that they believe this to be an isolated incident, reassuring residents that there is no ongoing threat. Local law enforcement is now cooperating with the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit, tasked with investigating the circumstances surrounding the death.

The community of Ditidaht, led by Chief Councillor Thomas, expressed deep sympathy for the families involved, calling for “gentleness and kindness” as the search for truth begins. Names of those involved have yet to be released, honoring the privacy of the grieving families.

In an effort to bolster community support, residents were invited to gather for an evening meal at their community hall near Nitinaht Lake. This gathering aimed to foster unity and healing during this difficult time. Various health services, including support from Tsow-tun-le-lum, the First Nations Health Authority, and the Nuu-Chah-Nulth tribal council, have stepped in to provide assistance in the coming days.

In light of the ongoing situation, the nation’s visitor centre and store near Nitinaht Lake were temporarily closed, and an annual general meeting scheduled in Port Alberni was cancelled, reflecting the community's focus on healing and support.

As RCMP officers continue to patrol the area, the Ditidaht First Nation stands resilient in the face of tragedy, seeking to heal together as one.
