Unforgettable Night: Friends Witness Rare Comet in Esquimalt!

In a magical display of celestial beauty, a group of friends experienced the awe-inspiring sight of the once-in-a-lifetime comet, C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS, on the night of Saturday, October 12, in Esquimalt. The thrilling encounter took place at around 8:40 p.m. at Highrock Park, as Megan Meraz led her friends in the search for this remarkable comet.

"It's truly a rare experience," Meraz exclaimed. "We were a small group, eagerly anticipating the sighting. Although it was quite dim and tricky to spot with the naked eye, our cameras were able to capture the comet beautifully with longer exposures. I managed to get a stunning shot with my DSLR by setting the exposure for eight seconds."

As the comet drifted through layers of clouds, it offered a fleeting yet memorable view before vanishing into the night sky. Reflecting on the moment, Meraz stressed, "We were so lucky to witness this event, especially knowing it won’t be visible again for another 80,000 years. We made sure to savor every second of it!"

Adding to the excitement, the comet was described by NASA astronomer Bill Cooke, who offered tips for aspiring stargazers hoping to catch a glimpse before its visibility fades by November. "To spot the comet, look for a location away from light pollution, and position yourself southwest, about 10 degrees above the horizon between the bright star Arcturus and the planet Venus," Cooke advised. The constellations Sagittarius and Scorpio serve as excellent reference points for this breathtaking spectacle.
