Celebrating National Organ and Tissue Donation Month
In a heartfelt tribute to National Organ and Tissue Donation Awareness Month, Pembroke Regional Hospital (PRH) is shining a spotlight on its unwavering commitment to organ and tissue donations and the tireless efforts of its staff and physicians who prioritize this vital aspect of end-of-life care.
A Commitment Since 2013
Since joining Ontario's Trillium Gift of Life Network (TGLN) in 2013, PRH has tirelessly promoted the significance of becoming a registered donor. PRH President and CEO Sabine Mersmann emphasizes the hospital’s pro-active stance. "Our involvement in the Routine Notification program guarantees that every patient death is reported to TGLN, allowing trained staff to identify potential donors with sensitivity and compassion." In the last fiscal year alone, seven remarkable tissue donors contributed to changing lives, a fact that fills the hospital with pride.
Exemplary Recognition
For the sixth consecutive time, PRH has earned the coveted Routine Notification Rate Award, boasting a remarkable 100% notification rate for the 2023/2024 year. With 126 notifications to TGLN, PRH joins an elite group of only four hospitals across Ontario to receive this honor.
"This award is a testament to our dedicated team," noted Beth Brownlee, the Vice-President of Clinical Services and Chief Nursing Executive. "Every opportunity for donation is treated with the utmost respect and compassion, ensuring no life-saving chance is overlooked."
Honoring the Hidden Heroes
On April 17, PRH celebrated the dedication of 14 frontline staff members, dubbing them 'Hidden Heroes' for their essential roles in the notification process. Many wore green as a symbol of support for organ and tissue donation.
A Life Transformed
The event was a poignant experience highlighted by a powerful testimonial from Dr. Debbie Timpson, a physiatrist at the hospital. She shared her husband Rob's incredible journey, who received a kidney transplant from his cousin Ian in 2011 after spending three harrowing years on dialysis.
"The transplant gave Rob 11 more years of health, energy, and freedom," Dr. Timpson reflected. "One cannot put a price on these additional years of life. We are eternally grateful for this gift."
The Power of Donation
Ian, reflecting on his life as a living donor, proclaimed it one of the most fulfilling choices he ever made. "Donating transformed my life—making me healthier, more present, and profoundly thankful. I urge everyone to think about becoming a donor."
A Call to Action
Despite overwhelming public support for organ and tissue donation—with 90% approval in Ontario—only 35% are currently registered. With over 1,400 individuals awaiting life-saving organs, PRH is fervently encouraging everyone to visit www.beadonor.ca to register and help spread the gift of life.
