In a significant health warning, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) alerted the public about a potential measles exposure at Erie Shores HealthCare in Leamington. The alert stems from an incident that occurred on Friday, March 14, between 8 a.m. and 11:23 a.m. Health officials indicated that individuals who were near the emergency department, particularly in triage and other areas, might be at risk.

Special Vaccine Clinic

To address the situation, the Erie Shores HealthCare emergency department is hosting a special measles vaccine clinic for those who may have been exposed. This clinic will be available on Monday, from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., providing an opportunity for unvaccinated individuals to receive the vaccine and reduce their risk of infection.

Vaccination Recommendations

The WECHU has emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, “For those who were exposed at the Erie Shores HealthCare Hospital and are unvaccinated, we strongly recommend a dose of vaccine to help prevent a measles infection before the end of the day Monday, March 17.” They advise anyone considering entering the hospital to call the emergency department at 519-326-2373, ext. 4400, for guidance.

At-Risk Groups

Special attention is being urged for individuals who are immunocompromised, parents of children aged 12 months or younger, or pregnant women. These groups are advised to reach out to the health unit promptly at 519-258-2146, ext. 1420, for additional support and potential treatments.

Measles Symptoms

Measles symptoms typically start with a high fever, runny nose, cough, and drowsiness, progressing to red eyes and a distinctive red rash. This rash usually appears 7 to 18 days post-exposure, starting on the face and neck before spreading to other parts of the body. The rash can last five to six days before gradually fading.

Prevention through Vaccination

The most effective method to prevent measles infection is through vaccination—specifically, receiving two doses of the measles vaccine, as per recommendations from health officials.
