A significant health scare has emerged as Northwest Naturals, a pet food manufacturer based in Portland, Oregon, has announced a voluntary recall of its Feline Turkey Recipe raw frozen pet food following the tragic death of a house cat.

The cat, an indoor pet, was confirmed to have contracted the highly pathogenic avian influenza (H5N1) after consuming the product, raising alarms across multiple states, including British Columbia, Canada.

The Oregon Department of Agriculture confirmed that the contaminated batch, which is packaged in two-pound plastic bags, was distributed not only in Oregon but also in states such as California, Colorado, and Washington, making its way into pet homes across the region.

The specific items affected are those labeled with 'Best if used by' dates between May 21, 2026, and June 23, 2026.

Dr. Ryan Scholz, a state veterinarian, emphasized the seriousness of this incident, noting that the affected cat was strictly an indoor pet, underscoring how the source of infection was indeed the pet food.

The recall has prompted immediate action, urging consumers to dispose of the recalled products quickly to avoid further health risks.
