Utah Hockey Club Trademark Extensions
In an exciting development for hockey fans in Utah, the Utah Hockey Club has officially filed for trademark extensions on two potential permanent team names: the Utah Mammoth and the Utah Hockey Club. This move follows a recent round of in-arena fan voting held at the Delta Center, which wrapped up early last month.
According to Cole Bagley from KSL Sports, the trademark applications for these names were extended by the United States Patent and Trademark Office in February. The voting featured several options, originally narrowed down to three names: Utah Mammoth, Utah Hockey Club, and Utah Wasatch. However, in response to some fan dissatisfaction, the club opted to swap out 'Wasatch' for the previously popular choice of 'Outlaws,' which already had an extension approved back in January.
This saga has not been without its challenges for the Utah Hockey Club. Earlier this summer, another fan vote saw the quirky 'Utah Yeti' leading the pack. Unfortunately for the franchise, the moniker faced a roadblock when the US Patent and Trademark Office rejected several proposed names and logos tied to 'Yeti.' The club's hopes of branding itself with this mythical name clashed with Yeti Coolers LLC, a well-known company in the outdoor equipment market. Efforts to forge a co-existence agreement ultimately fell through, leaving the team searching for alternatives.
Team president Chris Armstrong emphasized the ongoing journey towards establishing a permanent name, stating, 'We continue to work through our naming process and remain on track to announce the team name ahead of the 2025-26 season. Every day we get closer, but we're not there yet.'
Interestingly, while sorting through their naming challenges, the Utah Hockey Club is maintaining a competitive spirit this season. As they navigate the trademark maze, the team holds a record of 30-26-11 and is currently in the mix for a playoff spot in the Western Conference. They stand just two points behind the Vancouver Canucks for the coveted second wildcard position, showing that their on-ice performance is as dynamic as the decision-making off the ice!
Stay tuned for updates as the Utah Hockey Club gears up to unveil its new identity and battle for a playoff run! Will they hit the mark with fans this time?
