Windsor-Essex County Health Unit Launches Urgent Fall Immunization Campaign

In a timely announcement, the Windsor-Essex County Health Unit (WECHU) is urging residents to prioritize their health as we enter the peak respiratory illness season this fall. With flu and COVID-19 cases rising, the Health Unit emphasizes that getting vaccinated is one of the most effective strategies to avoid severe illness and hospitalizations.

Expanded Access to Vaccinations

In response to public health needs, Ontario has broadened vaccination access through pharmacies and healthcare providers. This initiative aims to ensure that those with limited access to vaccinations can receive them without barriers. Pharmacies and healthcare settings are anticipated to start administering the updated fall vaccines in mid-October, ahead of the general eligibility start date set for October 28, 2024.

Prioritizing Vulnerable Populations

Prioritizing the distribution of vaccines, the WECHU is dedicated to vaccinating hospitals and long-term care facilities first. They will subsequently assist in vaccinating other critical groups, including:

High-risk individuals

- Adults aged 65 and older - Residents of long-term care and congregate living situations - Pregnant individuals - Members of First Nations, Métis, or Inuit communities - Those from racialized and equity-deserving communities - Individuals with underlying medical conditions, including children with complex health needs

Priority populations

- Children aged 6 months to 4 years - Staff and caregivers within long-term care and congregate settings - Healthcare workers and emergency responders - Individuals frequently exposed to birds and mammals, including those working in agriculture or wildlife conservation

Easy Access to Vaccinations

For easy access to vaccines, residents can consult their healthcare providers or locate nearby pharmacies through the Ontario vaccine locator website. Booking for eligible priority groups at the WECHU can be made online.

RSV Vaccine Program Updates

Additionally, Ontario is continuing its high-risk older adult RSV vaccine program, initially launched in 2023, with expanded eligibility criteria. This critical program allows adults aged 60 and above who meet specific conditions—such as residing in long-term care homes or receiving hemodialysis—to receive the RSV vaccine at no cost.
