World AIDS Day was first designated in August 1988 by James W. Bunn and Thomas Netter, public information officers for the World Health Organization's AIDS Global Program. The day was officially approved by Dr. Johnathan Mann and has since become the first international global health day dedicated to the fight against AIDS.

The Theme for 2024

For 2024, the World Health Organization has chosen the empowering theme "Take the Rights Path: My Health, My Right!" This theme emphasizes the fundamental right to health care for all individuals living with HIV and underscores the importance of equitable access to treatment.

Since 2008, the Global Steering Committee of the World AIDS Campaign has selected yearly themes to mobilize global attention to the epidemic.
