Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has fiercely criticized Russia for maintaining military actions despite the so-called "Easter truce" declared by Vladimir Putin. While Putin urged a ceasefire, Zelensky reported a staggering 387 shellings and 19 attacks from Russian forces in just the initial six hours of the truce.
Zelensky highlighted the extensive use of drones, with reported instances reaching 290. Remarkably, there were no immediate reports of casualties, but the ongoing aggression paints a grim picture of the reality on the ground.
Initially set to halt military activity from 18:00 Moscow time until midnight Sunday, the truce has been marred by claims from both sides. Russia's defense ministry asserted its forces were adhering to the ceasefire, accusing Ukraine of multiple violations, stating that their troops faced 444 strikes and a barrage of unmanned aerial assaults.
Zelensky expressed skepticism about Russia's commitment to true peace, stating, "Moscow is trying to create a general impression of a ceasefire, but in some areas, they continue their aggression." In response, he affirmed that Ukrainian forces are ready to defend themselves vigorously against any attacks.
Despite the tense situation, reports surfaced indicating a rare calm over Ukraine's skies, with no sight of Russian drones or fighter jets, excluding a missile-launching ship spotted in the Black Sea.
In a strong diplomatic stance, Zelensky mentioned that should Russia genuinely pursue a ceasefire, Ukraine would reciprocate, extending an earlier proposal for a potential 30-day peace. He emphasized, "Our actions will mirror Russia's — if they are serious, so are we." Zelensky's remarks suggest both sides are keen to show the United States that they are earnestly considering peace, yet skepticism lingers among Ukrainians about the likelihood of such an agreement.
Putin's temporary ceasefire announcement, made during a meeting with military officials, was originally framed as a humanitarian gesture. However, historically, such ceasefire declarations have often crumbled under the weight of persistent hostilities.
As international observers call on Putin to prove his commitment to peace, the spotlight remains on whether a genuine resolution can be achieved or if the cycle of conflict will unfortunately continue.
