FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- In his first public comments since the shocking dismissal of New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh, quarterback Aaron Rodgers vehemently denied allegations suggesting he played a role in owner Woody Johnson's decision to fire Saleh after just five games.

"Let me address the serious speculation out there: I completely resent those baseless accusations," Rodgers stated during his appearance on "The Pat McAfee Show." "It's amusing how much power people assume I possess, which is simply not true. I have great respect for Robert."

Rodgers expressed his commitment to supporting interim coach Jeff Ulbrich, who might consider changes to the offensive coaching staff, including potential adjustments for offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, one of Rodgers' close friends. Although Ulbrich has hinted at possible shifts within the staff, he did not go into detail.

Sources revealed that prior to his firing, Saleh was contemplating a demotion for Hackett, a move that could have caused tension with Rodgers. However, during the show, Rodgers refrained from commenting on any supposed discord between him and Saleh.

In the aftermath of Saleh's dismissal, players expressed their shock at the decision. Following the news, the Jets convened a series of meetings, including a leadership council meeting attended by Johnson, where they focused on the importance of accountability. Tight end Tyler Conklin noted, “I don't think anyone here felt Aaron had anything to do with it. In fact, Aaron probably took it harder than anyone."

Rodgers emphasized this sentiment during the players-only meeting, promoting a team-centric dialogue focused on accountability. He also expressed his empathy for Saleh and his family, acknowledging that team dynamics might have shifted had the team performed better.

On the matter of his phone call from Johnson, Rodgers said, "It was genuine. We talked briefly about how I was feeling after the game and how disappointed I was in my performance." Importantly, he clarified that Saleh's future was not discussed during this five-minute conversation.

In light of the upheaval, Johnson clarified that the decision to terminate Saleh was solely his, stating, “My decision and mine alone.” He maintained that he sought no input from Rodgers before dismissing Saleh, who had an overall record of 20-36 during his tenure.

The relationship between Rodgers and Saleh has been closely watched, especially after Saleh fined the quarterback for missing mandatory minicamp in June due to a vacation. Despite speculation over their relationship, both parties have claimed it remains solid, with Rodgers asserting, "It's very solid."

In a farewell statement, Saleh expressed gratitude for the organization, his coaching staff, players, and fans but refrained from naming any individuals specifically.

Rodgers reflected on Saleh's impact, noting, "He was a big reason why I came to the Jets." He reiterated his stance against the narratives surrounding his influence, stating, "I’m not concerned with perceptions; I focus on my performance and the team's growth."

As the team grapples with this change, linebacker C.J. Mosley and offensive tackle Morgan Moses echoed the collective shock felt across the locker room. Conklin added, “We haven’t been performing as expected, and unfortunately, Coach Saleh had to shoulder the blame for our collective issues.”

The Jets now face the challenge of navigating a tumultuous season while adjusting to their new leadership dynamics. Will this change spark a turnaround for the struggling team, or is it just the beginning of a longer road to recovery? Only time will tell.
