In a significant development for Hong Kong’s infrastructure landscape, AECOM, alongside its joint venture partner AtkinsRéalis, has been awarded a contract by the Civil Engineering and Development Department of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government. This contract pertains to the design and construction of Package 3 of the New Territories North – San Tin/Lok Ma Chau Development Node, a crucial component of the ambitious Northern Metropolis initiative.
This transformative project is envisioned to support a burgeoning population of approximately 2.5 million people, fostering not just residential needs but also driving economic growth through innovation and sustainable urban development. The San Tin Lok Ma Chau development, scheduled for completion by 2038, will cover about 190 hectares and aims to enhance Hong Kong’s domestic innovation and technology sector while providing vital residential, commercial, and community spaces.
AECOM’s role in this monumental project is multifaceted, offering a comprehensive range of services including design, tendering, construction supervision, and environmental monitoring and mitigation. The firm’s strategy focuses on optimizing land use while ensuring the conservation of both natural and cultural resources in the area.
In a move that aligns with the HKSAR Government’s Smart City initiative, AECOM will also lead the creation of an innovative digital twin platform for the entire San Tin Technopole project. This digital infrastructure aims to streamline planning processes and enhance project delivery, working hand-in-hand with government frameworks such as the Common Spatial Data Infrastructure and the Integrated Capital Works Platform.
AECOM’s responsibilities extend beyond Package 3, as they are also involved in the design and supervision of a significant 250-hectare area within San Tin from the earlier Package 1. Additionally, they are conducting investigation studies for the Sam Po Shue Wetland Conservation Park, a groundbreaking project that will mark the first wetland conservation park of its kind in Hong Kong.
As Hong Kong pushes forward into this new era of urban development, the Northern Metropolis stands to redefine the city’s economic landscape and living conditions, paving the way for a future that melds technology with sustainability. Stay tuned for more updates on this pivotal project!
