At the forefront of sustainable development, AECOM, a prominent global infrastructure consulting firm, made waves at ReThink Hong Kong 2024, a premier event focused on sustainability, held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre on September 12-13, 2024. With a strong commitment to achieving net-zero emissions, AECOM unveiled its innovative "Playbook for Nature-Positive Infrastructure Development," created in partnership with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC).

The Playbook, a cornerstone of AECOM’s approach to environmental stewardship, features nearly 200 case studies encompassing a range of sectors including transportation, water, energy, buildings, and coastal projects. AECOM’s booth attracted hundreds of attendees, fostering engaging discussions about the company's ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) initiatives and climate advisory services, while exploring collaborative efforts aimed at enhancing sustainability across industries.

Attendees were particularly impressed with AECOM’s showcase of 15 exemplary ESG projects from across Asia, which highlighted the use of low-carbon construction materials in civil infrastructure. A standout example includes the pioneering application of S960 ultra-high strength steel in the Footbridge under Fanling Bypass Eastern Section, showcasing how innovative materials can drive sustainability in urban development projects.

Leading experts from AECOM delivered valuable insights on several critical themes, including the development of livable cities and improved mobility solutions. They underscored the importance of integrating green building technologies to cultivate thriving, community-focused environments and examined the potential of nature-based solutions in transforming urban landscapes. A key area of discussion was the Northern Metropolis initiative, which involves extensive city planning and infrastructure projects aimed at revitalizing Hong Kong's urban spaces.

David Gallacher, executive director of environment at AECOM, emphasized the firm’s pioneering role in guiding organizations through the complexities of nature-related financial disclosures (TNFD), helping them identify and manage their ecological impacts and dependencies. “We are actively collaborating with clients to design and implement nature-based solutions that are essential for fostering a nature-positive future,” Gallacher stated.

Recognized as the leading Environmental Consulting Firm by Engineering News-Record, AECOM remains steadfast in its mission to create sustainable legacies. Through innovative solutions and unparalleled expertise, the firm is dedicated to the dual goal of advancing development while promoting environmental resilience.

As the conversation around sustainability continues to evolve, AECOM is at the forefront, championing a balanced approach that harmonizes human development with the preservation of our natural world. ReThink Hong Kong 2024 showcased not just ideas, but actionable strategies that can propel cities into a sustainable future.
