In a heart-wrenching yet inspiring tale, Kristin and Jacob Tyler from Louisiana are celebrating the birth of their daughter, Adalida, who has overcome extraordinary challenges even before her arrival. During a routine ultrasound at 20 weeks in February 2024, doctors discovered an alarming abnormal growth – a sacrococcygeal teratoma, an extremely rare tumor that develops at the baby's tailbone, affecting about one in every 27,000 pregnancies.

“I was filled with fear,” reflected 23-year-old Kristin. “After countless doctor visits and seeing it on the ultrasound, it was terrifying.”

The Risks of a Growing Tumor

As the pregnancy progressed, it became abundantly clear that this growing tumor posed serious risks; by the time baby Adalida was brought into the world at 34 weeks, she carried a 'watermelon-sized' tumor weighing four pounds—remarkably close to two-thirds of her overall body weight.

Dr. Ahmed Nassr, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and surgeon at Texas Children's Pavilion for Women, explained that while most teratomas are benign, their size can create dangerous complications. “These tumors grow large blood vessels, essentially siphoning off the baby's blood supply,” he noted, which can put excessive strain on the baby's heart and lead to heart failure if not monitored closely.

A Proactive Move for Specialized Care

In a proactive move, Kristin and her one-year-old son, William, relocated to Texas to ensure they had access to specialized medical care for Adalida. The emotional weight of their situation was compounded by a sense of isolation; Kristin revealed, “There was nobody for me to reach out to talk about it. It felt like we were in the dark.”

A Bittersweet Arrival

Adalida was delivered via C-section due to the tumor's size. The medical team had to be exceptionally cautious to prevent any trauma or rupture during the delivery, as such an event could result in severe complications for the newborn.

The moment Kristin welcomed her daughter into the world was bittersweet; she glimpsed Adalida for just a moment before the newborn was urgently taken to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Overcome with emotion, Kristin expressed, “I was crying, and I was upset.”

A Miraculous Recovery

Fortunately, just two days post-delivery, surgeons successfully removed the tumor, and on June 29—what would have been her due date—Adalida finally returned home. Remarkably, she faced no complications throughout her tumultuous start in life. Kristin joyfully shared that Adalida has met all her developmental milestones, describing her as a “good, happy baby” and a true miracle.

“She’s healthy. She’s all good. She’s healed,” Kristin emphasized, her voice brimming with gratitude. “We refer to her as our miracle baby, our angel baby. So many people have loved her, and I’m incredibly thankful for the support we've received.”
