Alarming Botulism Case in Hong Kong: Woman Plagued by Unlicensed Botox Injections

In a shocking incident, Hong Kong’s Centre for Health Protection (CHP) is currently investigating a severe case of botulism linked to unauthorized botulinum toxin injections received by a 38-year-old woman in Dongguan, located on the Chinese mainland.

The woman, who was previously in excellent health, underwent these unregulated injections on October 27, from a source that remains unverified. Just days later, by November 3, she experienced a disturbing array of symptoms such as weakness in her limbs, difficulty swallowing, and drooping eyelids. Her deteriorating condition prompted her to seek medical help in Dongguan before being transferred to North District Hospital in Hong Kong on November 8, where she is now under careful observation and is stabilized.

In response to this alarming case, the CHP has notified mainland health authorities while initiating epidemiological investigations to understand the scope and source of this issue.
