In a recent rally in Idaho alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) reignited her push to ban stock trading by lawmakers, targeting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) for her questionable trading activities.
Ocasio-Cortez didn't hold back, directly questioning Greene’s ethics after it was revealed that she purchased shares in several companies just before former President Donald Trump announced a pause on tariffs. "We saw Marjorie Taylor Greene buy that dip," Ocasio-Cortez exclaimed, before posing her pointed question: "How much did you make off of people's despair? How much did you make off that panic? How much did you make off of that suffering?"
The New York Times reported that Greene's stock purchases, valued between $21,000 and $315,000, coincided with a market surge triggered by Trump's announcement. Ocasio-Cortez emphasized that lawmakers shouldn’t exploit their access to sensitive information for personal gain, labeling such behavior as corrosive and destructive.
"Members of Congress holding and trading individual stock is wrong — it needs to be banned for good," she stated, urging a bipartisan effort to end these practices.
The rally also turned up the heat on Trump himself, with Ocasio-Cortez branding him a criminal. She pointed to his recent legal troubles, saying, "When he talks about rapists and criminals, he should look in the mirror." With this fiery rhetoric, Ocasio-Cortez not only challenged Greene but also called into question the integrity of the entire political system.
As the debate over lawmakers trading stocks intensifies, Ocasio-Cortez’s bold confrontation of Greene could be a pivotal moment in the fight for congressional reform.
