Asteroid Shape Stuns Scientists

In an astonishing revelation, astronomers have discovered that asteroid 2024 YR4, once considered a potential threat to Earth, resembles a spinning hockey puck rather than the typical potato or toy top shapes most asteroids exhibit. This striking finding comes thanks to observations made at the Gemini South Observatory in Chile.

Rapid Rotation and Unique Dimensions

The asteroid, measuring nearly 200 feet in diameter, has a rapid rotation rate, spinning once every 20 minutes. Scientists were able to create a captivating 3D image of the asteroid based on multi-wavelength observations as it sped away from our planet just weeks after its discovery.

From the Asteroid Belt to the Moon?

Research team leader Bryce Bolin from Eureka Scientific noted that the unusual shape of 2024 YR4 challenges existing beliefs about asteroid forms. Originating from the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, it is believed to be rich in silicates. Earlier this year, NASA and the European Space Agency estimated a 3% chance of the asteroid colliding with Earth in 2032, but that risk has since plummeted to nearly zero for the next century. However, there remains a 3.8% possibility of it striking the moon instead.

Next Observations and Precautionary Measures

As 2024 YR4 approaches its next pass, it will soon be too distant for ground telescopes to track. However, the James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled to observe it later this month or next. These observations provide scientists with essential practice should a more dangerous asteroid ever threaten Earth.
