In a critical opinion column, it is clear that Auburn's basketball team urgently needs to step up their game as they navigate the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Despite managing to play a full game without any ejections, the performance against Alabama State was lackluster at best, especially for a No. 1 seed expected to dominate.

Auburn faced Alabama State on March 20, 2025, during the opening round. While they emerged victorious with a final score of 83-63, the game revealed fundamental flaws, particularly in the first half where the Tigers seemed sluggish and uninspired. Alabama State, the No. 16 seed, even threatened to take the lead before halftime, a moment that nearly ignited the crowd but underscored Auburn's struggles.

Auburn senior Dylan Cardwell reflected the team's frustration, emphasizing their need to channel intensity and aggression to keep their tournament hopes alive. "We’re not playing pissed off and it’s frustrating. We’ve got to figure out how to play pissed off because I’m not trying to go home," he stated, capturing the urgency that fans and analysts alike are feeling.

The discrepancies in energy levels between Auburn and its opponents were glaring. After a taxing semifinal against Tennessee in the SEC Tournament, Auburn appeared drained and unfocused, raising concerns about whether they peaked too early in the season. As they head into the next round against Creighton, who showcased their strength by defeating Louisville 89-75, Auburn cannot afford to continue their lackadaisical approach.

A palpable disinterest plagued the Tigers, with many players, save for standout Miles Kelly, appearing lethargic. Kelly, a transfer from Georgia Tech, shone with seven 3-pointers but even his efforts weren't enough to mask the overall team discontent. Notably, the Tigers struggled tremendously at the free-throw line, ending the first half at an abysmal 50% (7 of 14).

Coach Bruce Pearl's frustrations were evident as he substituted players in an attempt to ignite a spark. He openly urged his team to 'wake up,' as they risk falling short against a formidable Creighton squad that features a robust roster capable of punishing any lack of focus.

With the Sweet 16 looming, Auburn must rise to the occasion. A repeat of the opening round's performance could end their tournament journey prematurely, much to the dismay of their supporters. The question remains: will Auburn finally shake off the sleepiness that has plagued their tournament outings in recent years and demonstrate the prowess that made them the top seed?
