Backflip Secures $30M Series A Funding to Transform Text Input into Stunning AI-Generated 3D Designs

Imagine effortlessly creating a usable 3D design by simply typing a prompt, just like you would with ChatGPT. This is the groundbreaking vision of Backflip, an innovative startup founded by veterans of the 3D printing industry. Recently, Backflip raised a remarkable $30 million in Series A funding led by prestigious venture capital firms Andreessen Horowitz and New Enterprise Associates.

Traditional design processes for physical objects often consume hours or even days and require specialized expertise in computer-aided design (CAD) software. However, CEO Greg Mark and CTO David Benhaim, who co-founded the successful 3D printing company Markforged, aim to revolutionize this process by reducing it to mere minutes using Backflip's advanced foundational models.

"AI language models reflect our thoughts, vision models illustrate our observations, and Backflip is crafting foundational models that embody our building techniques," stated Benhaim. The company has developed models trained on an extensive dataset of approximately 10 million 3D parts, a project aided by AI that took two years to complete.

With this substantial funding, Backflip is gearing up to release its application, intended to democratize design capabilities for everyone—from manufacturers to everyday users. "Now anyone can do it. You can text prompts, sketch, or even use a photo taken with your iPhone, and just like that, your ideas can materialize," Mark explained, highlighting the accessible nature of the tool.

However, significant concerns arise when democratizing design capabilities, specifically regarding the misuse of technology for creating harmful products. For instance, a well-documented case involved a 3D-printed firearm linked to a tragic event. Mark reassured potential users that Backflip prioritizes safety, implementing two layers of content safety checkers to prevent the generation of dangerous designs.

This latest funding round has attracted an impressive array of investors, including Microsoft CTO Kevin Scott, Android co-founder Rich Miner, and Ashish Vaswani, a key contributor to the pivotal "Attention Is All You Need" paper that catalyzed the large language model (LLM) revolution.

Operating in stealth mode since its inception in December 2022, Backflip has already seen an undisclosed seed round before this significant Series A investment. This funding comes amidst a growing trend of venture capitalists investing in AI solutions designed to enhance or replace labor-intensive tasks across various sectors, from coding to legal services. VCs are particularly competitive in the AI-driven code editor market, exemplified by interest in platforms like Anysphere and Cursor.

For NEA partner Lila Tretikov, Backflip represents a larger strategy to back startups focused on creating and generating 3D environments and products. Tretikov also led NEA’s investment in World Labs, an innovative company founded by AI expert Fei-Fei Li, which seeks to craft interactive 3D scenes from single photographs.

Tretikov shared her vision, stating, "The integration of AI, combined with emerging techniques, will enable engineers and designers to create things beyond our current imagination." This reflects a broader trajectory in the realm of AI and 3D modeling.

Backflip's founders have strong ties to Markforged, which specializes in 3D printing systems and went public through a SPAC deal valued at $2.1 billion in July 2021. Despite Markforged's stock falling nearly 97% since the listing, Mark expressed that his experience there has profoundly informed Backflip's ambitions. He emphasized, "Building hardware is much slower than focusing on design software. The real challenge lies in the design phase. I aspire to see innovations that propel humanity into the future, and traditional design methods simply won't suffice."

Stay tuned as Backflip prepares to shape the future of 3D design—because what you create may soon only be limited by your imagination!
