As the Bengals gear up for the draft, a consensus among fans and analysts rings clear: Cincinnati desperately needs more picks to address key needs.

While they currently hold just six choices, the team has a laundry list of roster improvements. They aim to bolster their defense with an edge rusher and a defensive tackle, strengthen the offensive line with a starting guard, and create competition at linebacker. Additional depth at safety, swing tackle, tight end, and running back are also on the wishlist.

Bengals Director of Player Personnel, Duke Tobin, openly voiced his intention to acquire more selections for the draft.

"We have six picks in this draft, so we would like to have a few more and we’ll see if we can make that happen," he said.

How Can the Bengals Make It Happen?

Let’s explore the potential avenues the Bengals might take to enhance their draft stock.

1. Moving Back in Round 2: The Preferred Strategy

Historically, the Bengals prefer trading back in the second round to accumulate picks that carry early Day 3 value. This approach has proven beneficial in recent years, as evidenced by previous successful trades.

In fact, the Bengals have executed such trades five times in the last eight years. However, not every trade has been fruitful, as showcased in 2021 when the Bengals moved back and missed out on solid talent.

2. Trading Back in the First Round: A Rare Move

While less common, trading back in the first round could be on the table. The last time the Bengals executed a first-round trade was back in 2004.

Despite their historical caution, this might change with numerous teams eyeing a move back in the upcoming draft.

3. Potential Trey Hendrickson Trade: A Game-Changer

Trey Hendrickson's contract situation may create trade possibilities. The Bengals could leverage his value to acquire additional picks while seeking a replacement edge rusher at pick 17.

Tobin acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Hendrickson’s future, implying that if an edge rusher is selected, trade conversations will likely be reignited.

4. Germaine Pratt's Trade Request: Opportunity Knocks

Linebacker Germaine Pratt has been vocal about wanting a trade, and the Bengals are exploring options. Moving him could yield financial relief and additional picks.

However, the timing will be crucial. Preventing a loss of valuable depth before securing a replacement is essential.

5. Jake Browning and the Unlikely Trade Move

Though more far-fetched, backup quarterback Jake Browning could attract interest from teams hunting for QB depth. While loved in the Bengals' locker room, if a tempting offer arises, it’s not entirely off the table.

Final Thoughts: The Quest for More Picks

Ultimately, the Bengals' desire for more picks is evident. With multiple strategies at their disposal, this weekend's draft could be pivotal in shaping the future of the franchise.

As Tobin remarked, "We’ll see how many picks we end up with... If we can get some and add picks, that would be beneficial."
