In a thrilling development for fans of innovative storytelling, two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone, renowned for her performance in "Poor Things," and her husband, Dave McCary, a familiar face from "Saturday Night Live," have officially signed a first-look TV deal with Fremantle. This partnership marks a significant step for their production company, Fruit Tree, established in 2020.
As part of this newly minted agreement, Fremantle will serve as the primary platform for all scripted television projects and unscripted docuseries produced by Fruit Tree. The collaboration will also involve close consultation from Fremantle’s global drama division and international distribution team, maximizing the reach and impact of their creative ventures.
Previously, Stone and McCary had a first-look TV deal with A24, highlighting their continued rise in the industry. Their impressive slate of television projects already includes the absurdist Showtime series "The Curse," featuring Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie, and HBO's unique comedy "Fantasmas" by Julio Torres. Looking ahead, they will be delving into true crime with "The Yogurt Shop Murders," a documentary series directed by the acclaimed Margaret Brown for HBO.
Fruit Tree is not just limited to television; they hold a first-look film deal with Universal, signaling their strong presence in cinema as well. Their film projects feature a diverse range of voices, including Jesse Eisenberg’s "A Real Pain," and Julio Torres’ "Problemista." Exciting upcoming films involve "Bugonia," starring Emma Stone and directed by Yorgos Lanthimos for Focus Features, a comedic musical featuring Julianne Moore and Paul Giamatti, and yet another untitled film by Dave McCary.
The strategic partnership was set into motion by Lorenzo De Maio, President of De Maio Entertainment, who facilitated the initial concept of collaborating with Fruit Tree. He will be overseeing the agreement alongside Fremantle’s top executives, Christian Vesper and Seb Shorr, with Evan Gelb also taking the lead on behalf of De Maio Entertainment.
In her statement about the partnership, Stone expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “We’re thrilled to join forces with the brilliant team at Fremantle, a studio that continues to be at the forefront of independent television with a deep commitment to inventive storytelling. We’re so excited to build a creative home together and develop original narratives that challenge expectation and resonate with audiences worldwide.”
This partnership not only propels Fruit Tree into a new era but also promises audiences an exciting array of groundbreaking programming. Fans of Emma Stone and Dave McCary, keep your eyes peeled for their forthcoming projects — the union of their creative visions with Fremantle could redefine the landscape of television as we know it!
