In a harrowing start to their U.S. tour, the British band Sports Team was robbed at gunpoint just ten minutes after hitting the road. The unsettling incident occurred early Tuesday morning at a Starbucks in Vallejo, California, as the group prepared for their upcoming show.
Taking to Instagram, the band detailed their terrifying experience. “A man ran in shouting that some guys were breaking into our van. We rushed outside to confront the situation, only to find masked assailants ransacking our vehicle. When we yelled at them to stop, they brandished a gun,” the band recounted. Unfortunately, upon reporting the crime, the police advised them to 'submit an online report,' leaving the band to deal with the shock on their own.
Despite losing multiple personal items, including laptops, in-ear monitors, cameras, and passports belonging to three of the six members, the band thankfully preserved their instruments thanks to a fortified back compartment in their van. Frontman Alex Rice expressed, “It’s a ‘get to the consulate and sort out our passports’ sort of situation as the holiday season approaches.”
The band remains determined to continue their tour promoting their new album titled 'Boys These Days.' “We’re fortunate that we're still able to go on,” Rice added, acknowledging the support from friends in San Francisco and fans who have rallied around them in this difficult time.
This incident raises questions about safety for musicians on the road, as high-profile thefts have become increasingly common. Just recently, celebrities like Guy Fieri and Sammy Hagar faced a similar crisis when their trucks, loaded with over $1 million worth of tequila, were hijacked shortly after crossing the border. The ongoing issue of theft in the entertainment industry underscores the need for heightened security measures.
As Sports Team prepares for their concert in Sacramento tonight, fans are eager to show their support. “It’s a terrible thing to have happened, but we feel lucky that we can still perform,” said Rice, highlighting the resilience of their collective spirit. Stay tuned as the band shares updates on their tour and the measures they’re taking in the wake of this alarming event.
