SALT LAKE CITY – The dream of an undefeated season has come crashing down for BYU, as they faced a surprising defeat against Kansas, a team that has shown its potential despite a mixed record. This loss marks BYU's first of the season, and it comes at a critical juncture in the race for the top spots in college football rankings.
After a strong start to the season, including a near miss in a nail-biter against Oklahoma State, BYU has struggled to maintain momentum. However, in a twist of fate, Saturday's game dramatically shifted in Kansas' favor when a failed pooch punt accidentally struck a BYU player’s helmet, giving the Jayhawks a golden opportunity just inside the Cougars' 10-yard line.
But BYU was not the only team to suffer setbacks this week. A number of ranked teams encountered difficulties, leading to a significant reshuffling in the Associated Press Top 25.
As we approach the final stretch of the season, it’s becoming increasingly evident that several teams are beginning to separate themselves in the race for playoff contention. Yet this year feels more uncertain, with no team seeming to have a lock on dominance.
Here are my AP Top 25 rankings submitted this week:
1. Oregon
The Ducks remain undefeated and are currently in possession of the top ranking. Despite a scare from Wisconsin, Oregon managed to secure a victory, although some doubts linger regarding their consistency as they navigate the season.
2. Ohio State
The Buckeyes cruised to a decisive 31-7 victory over Northwestern, showcasing their capacity to dominate games. Nevertheless, Ohio State needs to tackle the challenges presented by their previous loss this season.
3. Texas
Texas oscillates between looking like championship contenders and merely a solid squad. An impressive defensive display against Arkansas was crucial, but their performance still raises questions about their reliability moving forward.
4. Penn State
The Nittany Lions took care of business against a struggling Purdue, reinforcing their status as a top contender without raising any eyebrows in the process.
5. Indiana
The Hoosiers have been an exciting story this season, recording an undefeated record. Still, their overall resume raises doubts about whether they are truly ready to compete with the elite teams just yet.
6. Georgia
The Bulldogs present a paradox this season, shining in some games like their matchup against Tennessee while faltering in others. Consistency is key as they aim to make a deeper run post-season.
7. Alabama
Amid FCS week, Alabama continues to be a perennial powerhouse but has faced questions about their ranking following a victory over Georgia. Notably, other contenders have netted stronger wins than the Tide.
8. Notre Dame
In a vibrant display, Notre Dame secured a commanding win over Virginia, benefitting from a defense that created five turnovers. With a pivotal game against an undefeated Army on the horizon, their progress will be closely monitored.
9. Miami
A timely bye week comes as Miami remains a team That has shown sparks of greatness. The potential of quarterback Cam Ward could see them make a significant impact as they head into the later weeks of the season.
10. Ole Miss
Soaring in after a victory over Georgia, Ole Miss took advantage of their rest week. Their talent is palpable; however, consistency will be crucial if they are to capitalize on their potential.
Dropped Out:
Kansas State, Louisville, LSU
Checking In:
Illinois, Tulane, UNLV
In Consideration (Alphabetical Order):

As the college football landscape continues to shift with each passing week, fans can expect an exciting finish to the season, filled with unexpected outcomes and potential playoff ramifications. Make sure to stay tuned as the drama unfolds!
