China Eastern to Launch Revolutionary C919 Jet on Shanghai-Hong Kong Route in January
BEIJING: In a groundbreaking move, China Eastern Airlines is set to debut the C919—a narrow-body jet developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC)—on January 1, 2024. This marks the first-ever commercial cross-border service for the C919, connecting Shanghai and Hong Kong, according to state-owned China Central Television (CCTV).
Till now, China’s three major state-owned airlines have operated the C919 exclusively on domestic flights, largely keeping the innovative aircraft within mainland borders. The anticipated daily return flight will not only augment China Eastern’s operational portfolio but also play a significant role in COMAC's strategy to attract its first international customers for the C919, a jet designed to compete fiercely with global giants like Boeing 737 MAX and Airbus A320neo.
Presently, China Eastern fields a fleet of nine C919 aircraft servicing various domestic routes. The new Hong Kong route adds an essential layer to their growing network, now encompassing nine major cities across the region.
COMAC has been aiming for an international leap, opening an office in Hong Kong just last October, following the establishment of its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore. This strategic move emphasizes COMAC's commitment to expanding its footprint in the global aviation market.
Looking ahead, COMAC has ambitious goals, setting its sights on securing essential certifications for the C919 from the European Union. The manufacturer aims to achieve this milestone by 2025, paving the way for its entry into more international markets.
With such developments, the launch of the C919 is set to be a pivotal moment in aviation history, potentially reshaping air travel dynamics in Asia and beyond. Buckle up as China Eastern Airlines prepares for takeoff into a new era!
