Cardinals Gather in Rome After Pope's Passing

In a significant and somber gathering, approximately 60 cardinals convened in Rome on Tuesday, marking the first general congregation following the death of Pope Francis. The urgent meeting, held in closed quarters, aimed to discuss essential matters including the date of the Pope's funeral and the suspension of beatification ceremonies.

Funeral Plans Set for April 26

The cardinals made a momentous decision, scheduling Pope Francis’ funeral for Saturday, April 26, at 10 a.m. local time in St. Peter's Square. Following the service, the late pontiff will be interred at the Basilica of St. Mary Major, fulfilling his own wishes. Before the funeral, his body will lie in state at St. Peter's Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay their respects starting Wednesday morning.

A Nine-Day Spiritual Preparation

This funeral marks the beginning of the ‘Novendiales’, a nine-day period of liturgical preparation leading up to the papal conclave, where cardinals from around the globe will engage in preparatory meetings known as 'general congregations'.

Oath of Secrecy Among Cardinals

During the nearly hour-and-a-half assembly, which began with a poignant moment of silent prayer to honor the late pope, the cardinals also adhered to a strict oath. They agreed to maintain 'rigorous secrecy' regarding the election process of the next Holy Father, as defined in Pope John Paul II's 1996 apostolic constitution, Universi Dominici Gregis.
