Elton John has proven to be a resilient icon at 77, and he’s not afraid to joke about the trials his body has faced over the years. At the premiere of his new documentary, “Elton John: Never Too Late,” at the New York Film Festival, the beloved singer drew laughter and applause from the audience with his candid remarks about his health.

“Honestly, there’s not much of me left,” he humorously told attendees following the screening, which was directed by his husband, David Furnish, and R.J. Cutler. John proceeded to list the organs he’s had removed — noting he’s missing tonsils, adenoids, an appendix, a prostate, and both knees, with only his left hip remaining intact. “But I’m still here, and I can’t thank you enough. You’re the ones who made me,” he added, expressing his gratitude to fans and supporters.

Throughout his career, John has faced numerous health challenges. Just last month, he disclosed that he was recovering from a severe eye infection that impacted his vision, on top of recent surgeries for knee and hip replacements. His medical history includes getting a pacemaker installed for an irregular heartbeat in the 1990s, being hospitalized for influenza and a bacterial infection in 2009, and dealing with gastric flu in 2016. John has also suffered from hearing loss after years of being on stage.

Concerns about his health were raised prior to his Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour, which wrapped up last year after an extensive five-year run and over 300 shows. A long-time friend and fellow musician stated, “He’s not Superman. He should be at home with his kids and husband, not stuck on the road.”

Elton has announced that he’s finished touring, stating, “At 77, I’ve done all there is to do, to play. I’ve succeeded, I’ve been there and I’ve done it.” He emphasized the priority of family in his life, expressing gratitude towards Furnish, their sons Zachary (13) and Elijah (11), and leading a fulfilling life outside of his music career.

“David, Zachary, and Elijah are the most important things in my life. I’ve found utopia and I’m so thrilled,” John reflected, marking a profound understanding of what truly matters to him.

“Elton John: Never Too Late” premiered at the Toronto Film Festival before its streaming debut on Disney+ in the U.S. on December 13. The documentary promises to deliver an intimate look at John’s 50-year career, culminating in his final North American show at Dodger Stadium in 2022. With a mix of his greatest hits, hidden gems from the ‘70s, and personal archival footage, it sets the stage for a revealing narrative of one of music’s most legendary figures, showcasing a story told like never before.
