In a shocking turn of events, former Minnesota Vikings star Adrian Peterson was arrested early Friday morning on DUI charges after being pulled over for speeding in the Twin Cities. The 40-year-old NFL legend was in Minneapolis attending the Vikings' draft party, a night that took a swift and unexpected detour.
According to the State Patrol, Peterson was spotted driving at a staggering 83 mph in a 55 mph zone on Hwy. 77 around 3:20 a.m., cruising in an Audi Q5. Officers reported that during his arrest, his blood alcohol content registered at a concerning 0.14%, nearly double Minnesota’s legal limit.
Following a quick booking around 5:15 a.m. on a misdemeanor count of fourth-degree driving while impaired, Peterson posted a $4,000 bond less than three hours later and was released. Fortunately for him, he cooperated with law officials throughout the process, though details about his four passengers remain under wraps.
An arraignment is set for May 9 in Hennepin County District Court. As of this afternoon, Peterson has not retained legal representation and hasn’t commented on the incident.
This latest arrest adds to a long history of run-ins with law enforcement for Peterson, which have included serious allegations such as child abuse, along with lesser offenses like speeding and not wearing a seatbelt.
It's worth noting that Peterson was provided transportation to the draft party by the Vikings, leaving the stadium at 9 p.m. in a team shuttle. His illustrious career with the Vikings spanned from 2007 to 2016, and he is remembered for rushing 14,918 yards—the fifth highest in NFL history, with a standout season in 2012 achieving 2,097 yards.
But history has its shadows; back in 2009, Peterson was pulled over for driving 109 mph, ultimately pleading guilty to a reduced speed. Similar tickets followed in 2010 and 2011 for speeding and seatbelt violations respectively. Not to mention his controversial past, including a plea to reckless assault in 2014 for disciplining his young son.
Peterson’s most recent troubles cast a cloud over his legacy, highlighting the challenges he has faced both on and off the field. As fans await further developments, the future remains uncertain for this once formidable running back.
