Gasoline Shortages Hit Florida: How Long Until Relief?

As Hurricane Milton made its way through Florida, drivers faced daunting challenges finding fuel to evacuate the affected areas. Reports indicate that as of Friday morning, nearly 29% of gas stations across the state were devoid of fuel, which translates to about 2,320 out of nearly 8,000 stations.

In high-demand areas, the situation was particularly dire. GasBuddy analyst Patrick De Haan noted that 73% of gas stations in the Tampa and St. Petersburg regions were out of gas. Other areas fared slightly better, with 54% of Sarasota’s stations empty, 42% in Fort Myers and Naples, 40% in Gainesville, and 34% in Orlando and Daytona Beach.

While efforts to replenish supplies are underway, experts advise motorists to delay their trips to gas stations unless absolutely necessary. Andrew Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates, urged, 'If you don’t need to go to the gas station, don’t.' These advisories aim to reduce congestion and optimize the efforts to deliver fuel.

When Can We Expect Gas Supplies to Recover?

Most of the gasoline consumed in Orlando comes through the Port of Tampa, home to 10 operational terminals. Currently, crews are working tirelessly to restore power and make these terminals operational again after the storm. Lipow explained that the recovery process involves extensive coordination, including bringing back terminal operators, truck drivers, and ensuring the Coast Guard inspects the shipping channels for debris and navigational buoys.

Lipow estimates that gas deliveries by tanker trucks may not commence until Sunday at the earliest. However, he reassured that other ports serving different parts of Florida remain operational.

'The situation will improve,' Lipow stated. 'A substantial amount of gasoline is en route to Florida, but the main hurdle at this point is restoring electricity at the Port of Tampa.'

Tom Kloza, a leading analyst at Oil Price Information Service (OPIS), predicted that the 'gas crisis' could see resolution within 72 hours. 'By Tuesday or Wednesday, we should return to normal,' he stated, offering a glimmer of hope amidst the chaos.

As Florida battles against the fallout of Hurricane Milton, residents are urged to exercise patience. With recovery efforts ramping up and gas supplies on the horizon, relief may be just around the corner – but in the meantime, remaining calm and prepared is key. Stay tuned for updates as the situation develops!
